Dr. Matthias van den Heuvel is an Associate with the Brattle Group in Paris. He holds a PhD in economics from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and did his Master's at the Graduate Institute Geneva and Yale University.
Dr. van den Heuvel specializes in the analysis of complex economic issues in international arbitration and court litigations, with a focus on environmental and energy economics. He has worked on a broad range on matters, from the valuation of energy assets to the estimation of the economic benefit resulting from non-compliance with environmental regulations.
His academic research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and has helped inform policy-making. Notably, two of his papers were cited in the U.S. Council of Economic Advisors’ 2024 Economic Report of the President, in the chapter on “Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition.”
Prior to joining the Brattle Group, Matthias worked as an economist for a private bank and for the World Trade Organization (WTO).
